Commander Young, R.N.
H.M.S.Excellent,
PORTSMOUTH.

Dear Young,

Confirming your visit

yesterday.

1. We are increasing the depth of the armour plating on the Oerlikon mounting and providing a plate to shield the gunner's face. We shall make these shields in half inch mild steel, and if any armour plate is available in time, we will substitute this for the mild steel. We have already explained to you our fears regarding the effect of the armour plating on the handling of the gun, particularly when the boat turns sharply or a cross wind is encountered. However, you know a good deal more about this than we do and, in any case, the service trials will demonstrate exactly what happens.

2. You have a list of spares. If possible, we shall arrange for a set of these spares to go with the first gun.

3. An expert will accompany the first gun to instruct the Navy personnel in its use.

4. An abbreviated instruction book will be available with the first gun.

5. A pressure gauge will be supplied with the toolkit.

6. The safety catch will be separate from the firing handle.
