Re. PETROL FILTER ON LEFT-HAND CHASSIS.

We consider the position of the filter as fitted to L.S.2.SS{S. Smith}01 to be very dangerous in regard to fire.

It is so placed, that in taking the filter down for cleaning purposes, petrol will be spilt over the magneto and it is quite possible for the petrol fumes to be fired by the magneto for some considerable time afterwards. I have actually experienced this with another make of car. In this car the filler of the petrol tank was direct over the magneto, a small amount of petrol was spilt and although wiped off, the fumes were fired upon starting up.

We have also had definite signs during a short test run of the petrol vapourising in the filter and causing an air lock through the heat from the exhaust manifold.

We have checked the flows to the carburetter and the amount passed being 103 pts/hr. and 38.8 pts/hr. through the float chamber.
