REPORT ON REAR WHEEL FOOT BRAKES.

We are carrying out a series of tests to obtain the amount of power which various kinds of brakes will absorb without failure. The bumps have been removed from the bumping machine and we are using the drums idly simply to represent the road. A car is fixed in position with the back wheels on the drums. The car is then driven by its own engine on full throttle top gear (4th speed) and the speed is kept down to 20 m.p.h. by applying the foot brake. The power absorbed by the brakes under these conditions is 27HP. The same kinds of tests are also made on the third gear, the power absorbed by the brakes is then 39 HP.

The following tests have already been made and in each case the brake shoes and drums were of the present standard width 1 1/4". In each case also the brake was made to come on when the pedal had moved 1" down. This amount of clearance is quite ample when using Ferodo liners.

Test 1.

1 1/4" wide drums and shoes. Ferodo lining. Ribbed air cooled drums (steel castings). Standard leverage.
