Bentley Air Silencer. Referring to your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}14/KW.27.3.36, this confirms that we are in agreement with the proposed scheme for cheapening the Bentley air silencer. The metallic wool filter which saves 5/10d has already been instructed for Phantom III in place of the Vokes type. The introduction of a lap joint on the thin steel in place of the welded seam used on the aluminium shell saves 2/11d it is noted, apart from any saving on the material, which is 1/1d. The new silencer is half a pound heavier than the one it will replace, but we consider well worth the saving in money. There is one small doubtful point, that is the question of rust. The interior of the silencer shell and the connecting pipe will have no definite protection against rust, and we think this is a point that should be watched on the test, to see if corrosion is likely to be experienced. We anticipate that the result will be satisfactory. We have arranged to send particulars of the changes in design to By/Cgh{W Clough} so that the detail drawings can be prepared.
