To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} & E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}14/KW.27.3.36. Bentley Air Silencer. We have been making an effort during the last few weeks to reduce the cost of the Bentley air silencer without in any way affecting the quality and efficiency of same, and we have now succeeded in obtaining a saving on material costs of 11/0d. by the following methods. (1) We propose to substitute a metallic wool filter which will cost us approx. 2/0d. in the place of the Vokes air filter now fitted, for which we are paying 7/10d., a saving of 5/10d. (2) The silencer shell EB.2766 we propose to make in 28 S.W.G. planish steel instead of 20 S.W.G. aluminium. This makes a definitely stronger job and can be made for 5/6d. as against the present price of 9/6d., a saving of 4/0d. (3) The downtake pipe EB.2640 we propose to make in a similar material and manner to the shell, and this we can obtain for 9d. instead of the present aluminium one which costs 1/3d., a saving of 6d. (4) Due to our efforts in conjunction with the Order Office, we have been able to reduce the cost of the inner pipe EB.2776 from 3/9d. to 3/0d., a saving of 9d. These items give us a total saving of 11/1d. All the pieces mentioned above are at present bought-out articles, and the steel shell and downtake pipe can be made locally in Derby for the prices quoted. We hand you herewith a sample silencer made up by the above cheapened methods. This silencer we propose to fit to B-56-BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} car for 10,000 miles test.
