YOUR REF. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}9/JH Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Dept. DERBY. File Dear Sirs, In reply to your communication of the 1st instant concerning Aerolite Pistons with raised crowns, we are pleased to advise you that this was received in time to embody the modification required to the new corebox which is necessary for Pistons with the crown raised .440" (now to be .470"). What we require to know now is whether you wish the 21 Pistons which we are making against your order 77110, to be modified in the same way. The castings for these Pistons are made from the old corebox which we manipulate so as to produce either the original dimension of .170" or the intermediate dimension of .300". We can alter this corebox to comply with your new dimension but the point is that we have already produced and heat-treated 31 castings against the order for 21 Pistons referred to above, and of course it will not be possible to remove .030" from the unaltered crown portion without making it thinner at this point by that amount. Will you kindly advise therefore at the earliest possible moment which of the following three courses you think it advisable to adopt. | ||
