Correspondence with Joseph Lucas Ltd. regarding the examination of a dynamo's bearings from a 12-EM trial car.

In reply to Hmll/WW7.12.23, paragraph 22, we are in receipt of a letter from Joseph Lucas Ltd. dated 2nd inst. as follows:- "We have dulynoted your remarks regarding the second "dynamo fitted to your chassis 12-EM. We shall be glad "if you will return this dynamo to us as we would very "much like to examine the condition of the bearings, "kindly advise us of its serial number so that there "may be no doubt at this end that we have the right "machine. "You will be aware that on electrical machines where "the temperature rise is a factor of importance, it is "necessary to use "slack" bearings (Hoffmanns "000" fit) "and this fact should be borne in mind when examining "the bearings of these dynamos. However we will "report fully to you when we have had an opportunity of "examining the machine." Paragraph 22 states that this dynamo has done about 2000 miles, but as yours Hm {Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} /NRC {N. R. Chandler} 10/D14.11.23 stated that the first dynamo (No.5894) did 7011 miles, I have assumed that the second dynamo will have done 3000 miles and I took the liberty of altering your figure. Please let me have the serial number of the second dynamo and say whether you are agreeable to the same being returned to Joseph Lucas Ltd. for examination. In the affirmative case, I will send you a label. Will you kindly let me know whether you agree with Lucas' remarks regarding the necessity of slack bearings to permit of temperature rise.
