STANDARDISATION SHEETS.

Referring to CJ3/E181121, this has been handed over to me by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, in order that I may put before you the present procedure.

In the first place after any particular modification in design has been standardised, the first thing that happens after I receive the fully signed up standardisation sheet is to give the matter consideration as to whether it is considered desirable from the facts of the case to incorporate the alteration in one of three methods:-

(a) without making scrap.
(b) scrap existing pieces and raw material.
(c) scrap all existing material and replace on cars already delivered.

In a number of cases I am able to decide from the facts of the case that it should be brought in under heading (a), but in the event of their being any doubt about this, then I deal with it in one of two methods as follows:-

(1) If the matter is a very expensive one and seriously affects the Works, the matter is discussed at the Works committee.
(2) If it is one that the Works Committee are not interested in so much as the Design Department, then I put the matter up to yourself and R, putting before you the facts of the case in regard to the cost of the scrap entailed.

Recent instances of this description would be the modification to the Torque Tube & Propeller Shaft Double Thrust Bearing. In this instance, owing to the large amount of material at stake and divergent views amongst officials, I sent BY7-P11721 (copy attached) to Hr, asking him to call a Works Committee meeting upon the subject. The result of this meeting was put before yourself and R, who agreed with a recommendation that the Double Thrust should be brought in at chassis 1971 of the postwar program.
