As previously reported, we have already experimented with a Lucas magneto in which the necessary range has been obtained without the use of a sleeve.
We referred to the advantage of the absence of the intermittent pull on the advance and retard mechanism with its various joints, and quoting from the report (EFC4/T27.1.26) are the following paragraphs :-

"Taken all round, the Lucas magneto appears to be a very promising proposition and we are only awaiting one of these which purports to have a specially silent contact breaker cam, before putting one of them on a chassis.

As regards the actual observed silence of operation, the bearings of the Lucas appear to be a little noisy; the machine was otherwise quite quiet in operation. The tangential force to operate the cam lever was, for the Lucas 1 lb. The Lucas machine is within our weight limit.

Later. 30.1.26.

The second Lucas magneto with specially silent contact breaker has now been tried on a car with very satisfactory results. For the time being the two Lucas machines have been returned to the makers, as it has been arranged by their Dr. Turner to send further magnetos with slightly larger magnets, larger distributor, and still further modifications to the contact breaker. The idea
