noise from the control linkages themselves when these
are new and in "just easy" adjustment, but the bigger
complaint of noise is from the magneto itself due to the
"flopping of the sleeve", at least it would be if the sleeve
were the least bit slack. By the recent improved bearing
of the sleeves, we have practically eliminated the noise
from this cause (leaving practically only contact breaker
noise), but this cannot be done without introducing a
certain amount of frictional force which has to be overcome
each way when advancing or retarding.

Even if the friction due to this cause were
reduced in the magneto, the action of a retarding spring
on the magneto lever would not prevent the sleeve from
"flopping" magnetically, and so being noisy, though no doubt
it would assist the operation of the relay advance and
retard.

So long as we have a magneto with a sleeve, we
shall be in difficulty as regards reducing the amount of
work the relay has to do, and also there will be likely to
be some development of slackness in the joints of the
control mechanism, especially if there is the slightest
little bit of slackness initially.
