Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited,
DERBY.

For the Attention of Mr. C. S. Steadman.

Dear Sirs,

We beg to refer to your letter of the 26th inst., addressed for the attention of Mr. Southall, reference Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std.25/KW, and we have since received the oil cooler referred to in the above letter.

We have examined this cooler on test and can find no indication that the joint which has developed a leak was not thoroughly soldered. It may be that the stringent test which this cooler has undergone, together with the considerable variation in temperature has resulted in unequal expansion and contraction at this point, which would cause the solder to fracture, although we have not seen a similar case during our own tests.

It is difficult to say whether this trouble is likely in service to any extent, but as service conditions are likely to be very much more uniform than the test described in your letter, we do not think this should be the case.

With regard to the squareness of the faces on which the unions seat, this matter has already been taken up and jigs have been made to ensure that no further trouble will be experienced.

FOR JOHN MARSTON. LIMITED,
Yours faithfully,

A.W. Dunn.
MANAGER.
