Copy sent to Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} X1114 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std.25/KW. 26th June, 1936. Messrs. John Marston & Co.Ltd., Paul Street Works, Wolverhampton. For the attention of Mr. Southall. Dear Sirs, We are returning to you herewith one of the Ph.III oil coolers which you have made for us, and which after passing your tests and our own pressure tests satisfactorily, has been run for 10 hours' endurance fitted to an engine. At the end of this 10 hours the cooler developed a serious leak at one corner as shown on the attached sketch, although the oil pressure even when cold never exceeded 100-120 lbs/sq.in. The running pressure with the oil hot ( ) was approx. 60-70 lbs/sq.in. It is only fair to state, however, that the conditions were not exactly as they would be on a car, in that the water passing through the cooler varied considerably in temperature from approx. 15°C. to 90°C., very often running quite cold. The failure, which is the only one we have experienced in service to date, appears to be due to a defect in soldering at one particular spot. However, the cooler is being sent for your confirmation and we should like your comments on it, after which it should be repaired and returned to us. A further point which requires remedying, and about which we believe our Order Office has already written you, is the question of the squareness of the faces on which the unions seat. As supplied to us these are very much out of square, and necessitate a good deal of fitting, which should be unnecessary. Yours faithfully, | ||
