X1263 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/JBD.{John B. Dixon - Fuel Systems}11/KW. 14th September, 1936. The S.U. Company Ltd., East Works, Adderley Park, Birmingham 8. For the attention of Mr. Leslie Kent. Dear Sirs, Thank you for your letter of the 12th inst., concerning the difficulties you are experiencing with the impact washers and the high lift pump. All your troubles appear due to the impact washer being set up too high, so that it comes in contact with the armature before the points have broken. To overcome this difficulty and the limits imposed by the washer, we suggest you set up the impact washer with .005" fibre or brass packing shims using a reduced brass distance piece. The impact washer should be then set so that the magnet pole piece projects the depth of the recess in a standard armature beyond the washer. A simple gauge, using a standard armature with a segment cut out to allow you to see the face of the armature, impact washer and pole piece could be used, and the impactwasher shimmed up till the gauge was in contact with the pole piece and the impact washer. The pump could then be built up with an armature with the recess .025" deeper and the pump set with points breaking 4 or 5 holes back as at present; the impact washer and not the pole piece giving you your setting and as this should be to within .005" of the present setting point, there should be no trouble due to weakness at the beginning of the stroke. The increased depth of the armature recess was suggested to allow clearance over the pole piece and bedding down of the impact washer. | ||
