X3587 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. BPT. for Mr. Brock. c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/H22.12.23. re 20-HP. Starter Bendix Gear Failures. Further to Item No. 66, in my report on 20-HP Failures, reference EPL/H15.12.23. We have today returned to the Works Motor No. 736, taken off a chassis on test on which the Bendix Drive slipped continually, as referred to in the first paragraph of Item 66. of the report above referred to, and I find we have returned a number for similar fault. On investigation, however, we find that the corks do not appear to have got actually "chewed up" as experienced in the case wereceived from 'N' Dept., but the small pips on the disc, Piece No. D.50892 appear to have been pushed off to the extent of bedding them into the cork pieces, and the slipping has taken place between this washer and the corresponding face D.50886. We have also had a failure of a Bendix Gear on the Prince of Wales new chassis No. GA-14, Starter Motor No. 476. We replaced the starter motor and have today returned to Mr. Brock this faulty motor. This drive stuck up due to the spring locking ring D50894 getting out of position and appears to have been forced on to the worm by the unscrewing of the nut D50933 which has a right hand thread. Our impression, as on previous occasions of the spring washers failing is that this nut is always found screwed back. We do not appear to be handling cars on test with the modified nut, which we understand has a left hand thread, D51060, and shall be glad if you will let us know definitely at what chassis number coming on test this will commence, and if possible if this can be anticipated. Any retrospective action? EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} | ||
