To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} 1181 also 1260 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}9/JH.15.11.37. WRAITH BRAKE LININGS. We have been in bad trouble on Wraith with brake squeaks but we have found an American lining (Thermoid D.35.I.H.) which is nearly squeak free. We want to fit it to the first six Wraiths in order to get more experience with it. To do this we will have to send an open order for 50 pieces in each of 4 sizes. Have we your permission to do this? The cost of a set of Thermoid is 15/8d. as against 22/8d. for Ferodo. There is a tool cost of £150 on Thermoid which we thus get back on 430 cars. In ordering a dozen sets for test we might have to pay double the normal cost, as the lining would be hand made. Thermoid Co. have sent us six sets free of charge.
