With reference to helical timing gears, I am pleased to see that these are considered to be good on the Marine Engine, and although it looks a lot of gearing it should be very easy to make, and capable of being set at any time to suit any change of position in the crank shaft due to wear of the bearings, and also can be reset at any time to take out any backlash between crankshaft and camshaft whenever it may be found to be desirable.

With reference to anything they have in hand such as the case of the plate clutch, if anything goes right or wrong, they seem to stop work and corresponding pieces of work which are going on. I think they should not stop progress with any experiments unless one experiment directly competes with another, and even in that case you or I should be advised that they are stopping or slowing up the experiments.

With reference to the plate clutch please ask that this may not be stopped owing to the indentations of the plate carrying grooves. This point has been dealt with in another letter by me and I think no trouble will be found with the new design.

With reference to keeping floorboards cool, what is required is to find whether the rise of temperature
