Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Fna.S/KT.12.1.33. Hawker's x refs. KESTREL ENGINE FOR HIGH SPEED "FURY" MACHINE. Kestrel II.S. engine No.1031 fitted with a Goshawk I type supercharger and carburetter, to be used as a special category engine for flight trials in a special "Hart" machine, has now completed its tests and is ready for despatch. The acceptance test which was carried out in accordance with Air Ministry instructions S.31392/R.D.E.2B. consisted of 35 minutes running at 485 B.H.P. 2500 R.P.M. and 5 mins at 2500 R.P.M. at rated boost + 1 1/4 lbs/sq.in. followed by 15 mins. at Full Throttle 3000 R.P.M. using special fuel 30/70/10 + 4 ccs T.E.L. (AV/Benz/Meth.), Lodge sparking plugs and Castor F.2. oil. These tests were carried out satisfactorily, the test at 485 B.H.P. comparing favourably with the type test results of Ms.119 engine, a fuel consumption of .580 pts/HP/Hr. and oil consumption of 3 1/2 pts/Hr. being maintained. The 15 mins. at full throttle 3000 R.P.M. also compares very favourably with the special category results of Kestrel 1025 engine (which failed on the type test) in developing a power output of 1068 B.H.P. at a specific fuel consumption of .575 pts/HP/Hr. The engine ran perfectly smoothly throughout the test, and no trace of detonation or preignition was observed. The oil consumption for the 15 mins. amounted to 5 1/2 pts, or a total of 22 pts/hr. The engine was then stripped and examined, the results being shewn on a separate strip report. The engine was then returned for final test, the requirements in the meantime having been modified owing to the failure of the special category tests on Kes. 1025 engine, and instead of being rated at Full Throttle, the conditions were modified to the extent of 'gating' the engine to 600 B.H.P. at 2500 R.P.M. and the final test modified to - | ||
