IRON FOUNDRY.

Bentley Cylinder Block & Head to L.E.C.5717.

Re. the memo HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/7/VS.{J. Vickers}31.8.37, we wish to report as follows:-

The alterations to design have definitely improved the job from the Foundry point of view, with one exception, viz., that of moving the cored inspection holes on to the intermediate barrel centres.

Our suggestion to maintain them on the barrel centres was turned down by design owing to the fact that the covers would then foul the distributor control rod. This in effect means that:- The venting outlets have been reduced from 6 to 5. We are unable to jig up castings on to diametrically opposite points on the cylinder walls. It necessitates an entirely new set of moulding boxes, whereas the Standard and the Wraith boxes would have been interchangeable with this job.

The case of porosity has received the attention of Mr. Knagg and myself and we have decided, should it re-occur to introduce a small densener to counteract the trouble.

Out of the first batch of 32 standard blocks delivered to the machine shop which were cast in identically the same way, the first 20 have been passed O.K. so, that we are quite naturally reluctant to resort to denseners unless absolutely compelled.
