Bentley Carburetter.

With reference to the occasional flooding troubles experienced on the above.

Although we have not had the trouble in this Dept. since the modifications to the needle and seating, Production have had one or two cases, but in each case they have not been able to reproduce it.

We do not think that the trouble is caused through the needle but through the float mechanism generally.

At present there is a brass tube running through the float, the ends of which are quite sharp. The centre studs which locate the floats are cadmium plated and in some cases are very rough, so that when filling the float chambers, from dry especially, the floats (which do not always float vertically) could heel over causing the float tubes to bite into the soft plating of the studs and so stick without operating the needle.

The S.U. Co. agree that this could happen, and are sending us for test two floats with the float tubes "bell-mouthed" and studs to suit.

Referring to the modified float chamber as per attached drawing. The S.U. Co. forwarded one of these drawings to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} some little while back, asking for criticisms, but for some unknown reason it was put to one side. I have seen E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} re this and he has now written the S.U. Co. criticising the following points -

(1) Scrubbing and side thrust when float is operating needle.

(2) Short control of needle when off its seating.

(3) Poor control of float.

(4) Poor section of float chamber where tapped for screws.

(5) Poor petrol joint to lid.{A. J. Lidsey}

(6) No float tickler shown.

We are now awaiting a reply from the S.U. Co.
