NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE 24, ELDON PLACE, BARRAS BRIDGE. 15th June, 1939. YOUR REF. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}9/MH.{M. Huckerby} OUR REF. WES/PW. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Experimental Department, Derby. For the attention of A.F. Martindale Esq. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 14th instant, and note your instructions with regard to your axle and brake drums. The latter will certainly be useful for test purposes, particularly as reference drums when testing different types of brake lining. With reference to the crank shaft damper details, we propose supplying these in Ferodo VM.20 material which has a moderate coefficient of friction, and according to our measurements the least possible difference between static and slipping µ. With regard to prints No. EXS.1763 and 1773, we imagine these are bushes for the damper fly-wheel and there is no difficulty in manufacturing these in Ferobestos except that with our available equipment we shall have difficulty in holding the diameter and bore to the stated limit of plus .000" minus .001" and minus .000" and plus .001" respectively. The writer is raising this question with our Works and we wonder if we find it impossible to work to these limits whether the final machining of the bushes could be carried out by your goodselves. Finally, there is no difficulty in treating either of these items by dipping in wax, and we are entering our order to correspond with your instructions. Should we be unable, however, to machine the bushes to your limits and you agree to do the final machining, the waxed bushes should, of course, be dipped after the final machining operation. However, we will write you again with regard to this question of limits. Yours faithfully, FERODO LIMITED. W.E.Shilton Manager, Technical Department. | ||
