There has been trouble with this job from the introduction, and after a number of complaints we got Maltravers to come down early in September. I demonstrated a cam built into a box to him, Mr. Elliott, and BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}, the complaint being slack in centre, and tight places either side of centre which error is not permissible. Maltravers suggested that a modification to the cutting radius was indicated, and at a conference at which E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} were present it was agreed the Adamant Co. should produce a quantity of cams and submit the first one for our approval. A cam was obtained out to the suggested modification, assembled in box and passed by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}, BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}, Hardy and myself as satisfactory. Since this we have had a good run on production (approximately seven weeks) and no rejects for the tight spot trouble until last Saturday the 21st. inst, since when we have rejected approx. 25 Cams Phantom lll and 25/30 HP. Mr. Davies, Adamant Representative, did not know much about the production of the cams, and his visit from our point of view was not very helpful. He agreed the error complained of did exist, and he suggested stoning a cam which was shown to him assembled, but after some hours spent on it gave up. I sent a box to Luton some two months ago to enable them to try the cams but apparently they have not used same. Our rig is being sent down to them by passenger train tomorrow, BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}, and myself are going on Monday morning. My opinion is that these people have not been accustomed to produce work to our standard of quality, and find it difficult to maintain. We have had tremendous trouble with the 25/30 Rollers in addition to the cam troubles. RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/S.Goodall. | ||
