To RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/EJB. from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} 1300 Re. your memo RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/EJB.1/MR.25.11.36. The model steering was sent over primarily to shew that the recommended set up load on the steering wheel with a tight spot in the centre and backlash on the locks could be obtained. The model gear did demonstrate that this was so. The adjustment complained of by the Production Dept. was the pre-load on the rockershaft bearings. The original recommendation for this was ½lb. on the end of the pendulum lever, which was deliberately made a very small amount to avoid opening the joint in the box, and was specified to ensure that gears were not assembled with slack at this point. The model gear had no slack at this point and the pre-load was between 0 and ½ lbs. We have measured the rockershaft pre-load on ten Production steerings with the following results in lbs - ¾, 2, 3, 3, 1, 3½, 5, 3½, 3, ¾. It seems that the Production Dept. have found that it is desirable to have more pre-load on these bearings and have adopted the increased load without consulting the Expl. Department. We have no objection to a reasonable increase of load provided that it does not lead to oil leaks and we suggest that the Production Dept. should let us know what pre-load they would like so that we can run it on 10,000 miles test. In the meantime, we cannot be responsible should any troubles arise from the increased pre-load. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} | ||
