Advantages of a new magneto design and proposals for testing on an experimental chassis.

(1) Considerably easier control of the cam advance, i.e. less force required to move cam lever.

(2) Complete absence of magnetic oscillatory pulses at the cam advance lever, thus preventing the fairly rapid wear of the joints of the oil relay mechanism linkages.

(3) Probably improved electrical characteristics, particularly at the high speeds.

(4) Somewhat smaller cost and presumably better service.

Alternatively we might ask the Watford people to produce a magneto without a sleeve, using longer cams, the internal time functioning of the magneto to be re-arranged, one reason for this being the prolongation of the life of the contact points, and a reason for the use of the long cams being some appreciable quietening of the make and break.

The one Lucas magneto of this type at present in our possession is on experimental chassis 12-EX for the 10,000 mile test.

We wish it to be clear that there is not and has not been any intention of rushing tests of this type of magneto, but merely that tests should be proceeded with, because it does show some promise in directions favourable to our requirements.

At the present moment the two magnetos received have been submitted by Messrs. Lucas at their own expert expense.
