Comparative testing of the Lucas magneto against the standard Watford magneto for potential standardization.

In our EFCL/T7.6.26 it was definitely stated that it was not our intention to rush this magneto for standardisation nor have we ever suggested it. The origin of these tests has been primarily due to the unsatisfactory performance of the Watford magneto and several magnetos of different types have been tested to ascertain if there was a definitely better magneto on the market. So far the Lucas and the Simms have shown the best performance, the Lucas scoring from the point of view of noise up till now. Please refer to WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}64 (first two paragraphs) We fully appreciate that R.R. should not be influenced by price considerations and it was not intended in our report that this should be a potent reason for recommendation. Our opinion has generally been that if we can produce a magneto which gives an unquestionably better performance on the bench and gives entirely satisfactory results on the chassis for 10,000 miles, it should be worthy of further experiment and investigation, and if after prolonged and careful tests is proved a definitely better and reliable proposition, should be standardised.
