Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Date 9.11.28. Page 2 we should expect it to begin to pump, always assuming that it was very close to the baffle. It has been difficult to get this cup high enough, owing to the unit being installed to the rear of the maximum depth of the tank, and in addition to this there may be a local interference such as you suggest. In addition there is the suggestion that the angle at which the unit is installed may be slightly more than that shown on the drawing. We tried to place the cups horizontally to correct this angle, as pumping is no doubt more effective with the cup as nearly horizontal as possible, but this is a point upon which it is very difficult to get any direct line. We think that pumping should commence if possible after two gallons have been used; one uncalibrated gallon and the other the first gallon on the calibrations. We are carefully studying the possibility of so arranging the top cup to bring it higher, and in a better position, but difficulties arise when getting the unit through the gauge hole in the tank, if we place it in the ideal position, that is to say, off-set so as to come up against a baffle, also off-set to come in a higher portion of the tank than that in which the unit is situated. | ||
