RE BATTERIES.

Referring to Ps9/JP. 18.5.22. Mr. Clarke is not at the Works at the moment, and I do not wish to make any remarks, therefore, until I have had an opportunity of discussing the matter fully with him, in regard to the technical part of the memo.

There are, however, one or two points which do not come under the heading of being strictly technical, which I would like to make:-

1. We did not wish, and did not try to convey to Paris the idea that the Exide Battery has not given us trouble, but from the point of view that we have some 2000 cars in service fitted with these batteries, the amount of trouble we have had in England appears to be small. It was mainly confined to two points,

(a). Failure due to short circuits internally, result of the plates buckling. This was overcome by adding the ebonite separators I referred to in BY3/P. 15.5.22.

(b). The second failure was insufficient space for the accumulation of deposit in the form of mud from the plates at the bottom of the battery. Here again this matter has been satisfactorily cleared up some time ago, and since clearing it up, we have had no single complaint of a new battery giving trouble which has been fitted with both the improvements referred to above.

2. In regard to the question of a conference between Derby and the Exide Company, there was no wish to keep Paris in the dark in regard to this conference, as the issue was one which would effect them sooner or later, and they will therefore be informed from the right source as to why the conference was held, and the results.

I might point out, however, that the question under discussion was one of "service" more particularly
