VENT PLUG FRONT SUSPENSION -
PH.III. AND WRAITH III.

Under certain circumstances water and sand get into the permanently open vent on the Wraith III. and Ph.III. Front Suspension. We suggest that an experiment be tried with this plug deleted.

We appreciate that it will be impossible to fill the front suspension pots to the present height, the oil level being lowered a little over an inch. We would like to know whether with this lowered oil level air will get into the damper, and whether oil will reach the upper triangle bearings.

Our alternative scheme would be to have a vent in the present position which could be opened only when filling the front suspension with oil, and such a vent is shown on LeC.5699 herewith. It is intended that the small plug be unscrewed only a few turns to expose the air holes when filling. We appreciate that to do this it would most probably be necessary to jack up the front of the car and to remove the wheels which is admittedly rather undesirable.

As a third and more drastic suggestion, we are investigating the possibility of raising the fillers where they join the main suspension body so that no vent would be required to enable the oil level to be maintained at its present height. This is a serious change as it calls for modifications to some of the major features of the suspension and possibly the radiator.
