Huckerby}27.11.39. 4.B.50. The preliminary run on this car showed it to be reasonably promising. The following faults were observed:- (1) Carburetter idling and starting. The fast idling when starting is too fast. There is something wrong with the specification of the thermostatically operated choke because after running for about 2 or 3 minutes the carburation gets so over-rich that the engine will hardly run at all because of loading up. When thoroughly warm the idling is no better than any 8-cylinder cars we have previously tried. The snap acceleration is not as good as that on Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s car. (2) The standard of silence of the gearbox is poor. (3) The clutch pedal is heavier than that on Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s car. (4) The steering seems unusually low geared. The wheel seems to be smaller than that on Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}'s car. If this is so, there is no reason why we cannot have a Wraith wheel on this car. A little more backward pivot lean would improve the directional stability of the steering. (5) The car seems to be generally rather more noisy in the driving seat than 11.B.V. The fan noise seems worse. Is this fan too close to the radiator matrix? (6) Tappet and valve spring noise seems to come up the thermometer. Has this got the noise insulated water pocket we developed for Ph.III? (7) Are there any bits of rubber for insulating the steering column? If so we should like to try them. (8) Brakes. There is a slight servo judder on the brake pedal at all times. | ||
