In consequence of this, two different schemes were put in hand, by the Experimental Dept. and the Design Dept. The first of these, Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}106 (see sketch) reversed the direction of rotation of the toggle shaft by introducing a second shaft to drive it. This scheme was very successful as it neither juddered nor thumped either forwards or in reverse. Its mechanical efficiency is unfortunately very low (see graph) and the consequent drop in front braking quite noticeable.
