Experiments to investigate car juddering by adding weights to the adjusting nut and reversing the front brake operation.

(9) A very important experiment was now made. Two small weights, each of 3/4 ozs., were fixed to the adjusting nut on a standard car, as shown in sketch -

This car juddered very easily. Since adding inertia to the adjuster increased the tendency to judder, reducing the inertia or altering its sign should have the opposite effect; consequently -

(10) We built up a car with the entire front brake operation reversed from one side to the other. In order to do this the brake cables had to operate below the axle and the tension rod pulling the last external lever came in front of the axle, restricting lift lock. This was done on two cars, one with standard drums, the other with aluminium (rigid) drums. In neither case could judders or thumps be obtained going forwards, but judders and thumps occurred very easily in reverse.
