X7280 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}1/HP.31.1.34. P.II - Starting Carburetter Control. With reference to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}4/KW.31.1.34 dealing with the complaint of the starting carburetter control working open, we have examined the suggested modifications and agree to them being adopted. Will you, therefore, please instruct accordingly for all Phantom II cars fitted with automatic damper control. We understand that cars in the Works suffer from this and we should not let them get into customers hands with this defect. The control rod operating the extra oil cock comes very close to the crankcase breather pipe in one position (approximately .125 clearance); we think this may be just sufficient to allow for dimensional limits. With the control in the running position the rod comes well away from the breather pipe so that if it should foul slightly in some cases, it is not a very serious matter and can be remedied by a slight set in the rod. We have another scheme - LeC.3775 in which the control is restrained at the instrument board from moving open due to engine fidgeting, but we prefer to use the Experimental Department's modification as shewn on HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1290.
