MAINTENANCE OF HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.

Tests have shewn that the hydraulic dampers should not require re-filling in less than 10,000 miles running. We recommend that whenever a car comes into the Depot for overhaul, the casing of the hydraulic shock damper should be carefully inspected for leaks. The most likely place for leaks will be the gland. If this shews signs of allowing an excessive quantity of oil to escape from the casing, it should be subjected to the pressure test mentioned below and if it fails, it should be re-packed.

The following test should be rigged up after re-packing the gland to ensure that it is functioning satisfactorily :-

It is important that when the shock dampers are completely emptied and filled, all air should be excluded from the system before the cap covering the high pressure valve is finally placed in position.

The gland should be subjected to a bench test after re-packing. For this test the shock dampers should be filled with oil to the level of the cap face. A special cap should then be fitted carrying a tyre valve and pressure gauge connection. A thick rubber washer should be fitted to the cap face. The pressure under the cap should be raised to
