Thermostat-controlled shutters and bypass systems for car radiators.

| Contd. -3- Jan. 28, 1921. Cadillac car and was the first firm to produce the thermostat controlled bypass in this country. A picture of the thermostat operation on the Lafayette was sent to Mr. Royce a few months ago. We know that Mr. Royce has designed a scheme for a thermostat operated shutter, which we think would be most satisfactory so long as it is placed in front of the radiator, but we feel sure that it would not be considered satisfactory in this country if placed behind the radiator. (5) Mr. Belnap reports another feature of the thermostat on the Cadillac, namely, a surging in the running of the engine, due to the fact that the valve in opening and shutting first cools the cylinders and then allows them to run hotter. I do not know whether this effect has been met with at Derby but we shall try to observe whether it occurs on 4.MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} in very cold weather. Summarizing. We believe that the use of a thermostatically controlled shutter of our own design is desirable. Meanwhile we can fit cars with the Allen head operated shutter or with thermostat controlled shutters made by the Winterfront people or Galli-ator people.
