'R' ENGINE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS ----------------------------- We have obtained from Messrs Firth & Sons approximately 40ft of nickel chrome molybdenum vanadium steel, 1" diameter special for the 'R' engine connecting rod bolts. New blue prints are being issued for these bolts but the lengths will be as previously, and therefore from the point of view of preparing the material for heat treatment the old drawings can be worked to. The bolts are required to have a Brinell range of 302 to 321, and we are informed by Messrs Firth's that the heat treatment required to obtain this result is:- (a) Heat to 850°C quenching oil. (b) Diameter at 625 to 645°C. We should make as many bolts as can be obtained from the material available, which is in the Central Stores awaiting disposal instructions from the Experimental Dept.
