Replying to Lp.{Mr Lappin}9/LAM.17.11.32. We shall be disappointed if, as a result of the 100 hours Type Test with 4 cc's. TEL. we do not get a release from the Air Ministry that our engines can run with TEL. up to 4 cc's./Gallon. We think with most fuels to get the present standard knock rating of 76 at 100°C. it will not be necessary to put in as much as 4 cc's. We have for some time now been running a 111 F.{Mr Friese} and Horsley at Tollerton on fuel with 4 cc's. TEL. With a fuel of 90 octane number we could considerably increase our rating. We think however that this point is being looked after at the moment by our Civil Type Test at the approx. 500 HP. rating and the matter can be reviewed again after conclusion of that test.
