E C O N O M Y. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ It may not have been fully appreciated by every manager at Derby that the future of the Company depends on their individual ability and energy in effecting economies in every detail of expenditure, and that to effect such detailed economies requires a very considerable amount of their personal time and thought to consider every detail of expenditure in their respective departments, and in the Works in general. The basis of such consideration should be "Will the Company cease to exist if this expenditure is altogether cancelled?" If the manager is doubtful whether such an economy might be bad policy he should please refer the matter to the Administration in London for a decision. To-day the value of an official must be gauged by his capacity to adapt himself to thinking in this entirely new direction. Whereas in the past we have found it advisable to spend money rather freely (and this habit very easily developed during the war), we now have to turn a complete mental somersault and realise what are absolutely essential expenses and what can be done without. Obviously the Company's expenses can and must still be reduced to a very considerable extent forthwith, seeing that our output is being rapidly reduced from forty to ten chassis per week, and our cash receipts are being reduced in proportion. At present we are by no means certain we can sell even 10 chassis per week. Every official should devote a considerable portion | ||
