4840 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}) DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) LE CANADELHenry Royce's French residence. c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} RE. RR. HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS. X.235 X.8410 X.8520 X.8430 We could not fit these to 7-EX satisfactorily because of the second wing stay preventing the damper body going back and because the engine suspension prevented the front bolts going forward. (1) We could make a possible and really easy application if the front 2 bolts had their centres altered from 3" to 2 3/4" so as to suit the holes of the RR. friction damper. (2) The lever looks as though it should be say .5" longer to come to the same position as the ball of the RR. friction one and only needs the connecting rod lengthening. (3) If our wing stays are made standard it would be better if the second one was say .3" further back. Great efforts should be made to quickly get these correct and into production as they seem a necessary and possible improvement of the riding, steering, and tyre situation, which is so acute. WW. and Derby should get together and put in the final corrections, whatever is thought desirable and possible in the time. It may be that we must go on with the 3" centres and only push the damper body further back than was possible on 7-EX. (because of the wing stay) but this would seem to demand a longer lever on the damper. contd :- | ||
