X 7090 To WCR. from E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} c. Ss.{S. Smith} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Sft.{Mr Swift} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HDY.{William Hardy} E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} re Balancing Cam - Phantom II. After further investigation into this modification, we find that it will not be possible at the moment to introduce the balancing cam on production on the Phantom II car. The difficulty is that the balancing cam takes up the space previously occupied by the vacuum pump, and it is not possible to find an alternative position for the pump without extensive modifications. Again we do not wish to use the S.U. type of electric pump as an alternative means of petrol supply because at the moment there is not in existence a pump suitable to the size of engine. The balancing cam however should be incorporated in the 10,000 miles test car as a means of testing out the value of this device on the Phantom II car. The petrol supply for this car can, we think, be fitted up by the Experimental Department using three S.U. electric petrol pumps mounted in a suitable cool position. We do not think that the balancing cam is a modification which is urgently needed by production on the Phantom II car, as the timing gear rattle complaint is not so evident as it is on the 20/25 HP. car.
