328 To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP.30.12.36. P.3. GEARBOX CHUNKING. We have borrowed 36-EX. off Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} for a few days to see whether we can reduce chunking noises without any attention to the fit of the sliding pieces, by merely taking all possible end float out of the three shafts. Will you therefore please modify the gearbox in 36-EX. by fitting - (1) Two Schatz bearings on the 1st and 2nd. motion shaft. (2) Double row bearing at the moment in box 4.HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} at the rear of the 3rd. motion shaft. (3) Remove all float from the inner races of the bearings by slightly end loading the shafts. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
