It may be that we are overlubricating this point from the self-lubricating system from the gear box. A peculiar feature is that it has only developed up this last day or so. It does not in any way interfere with the clutch stopping or cause any slipping, therefore it eliminates the question of the fabrics fouling the outer sheal of the clutch. Upon looking at the drawing of the arrangement of this oiling scheme, it is obvious that the back spigot bearing of the clutch there is no escape, only through the splines of the universal joint, and as we are using a thicker oil in the gear box than what we have previously, it is obvious that the centrifugal action is forming a definite oil seal in the clutch spigot end, and we are having to either drive the oil out or compressed air. To prove whether this is the case, we are going to plug up the oil supply from the gear box. This should very definitely prove out whether it is the oil that is causing the trouble or not in a very short time.

Re the steering. We have, as reported to you previously, made a definite improvement in the sluggishness and stickiness of the steering after hard running, by making small wells in the pads of the cross steering tube. We have entirely eliminated the feeling of having to wind up the springs in the side steering tube, as we previously did. The steering now, although it is slightly heavier after a hard run, is quite a 75 or 80% improvement. We are going to make the recesses in the pads slightly deeper to see whether we can get a 100% job.

Re valves. We have not, after fitting a new exhaust valve in No. 3 cylinder, had any sign of this valve
