To D/L. from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} XL 99a Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}11/KW.19.12.34. Accident to 27-EX, driven by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/C.A.Ward. We give below particulars of an accident to the above :- 1. Rolls-Royce 44 h.p. 2. 27-EX. GX.3477. 3. Dec. 17th 1934 at 6 p.m. 4. Dec. 18th reported by C.A.Ward. 5. On the road from Mansfield to Newark, approx. 4 1/2 miles from Newark. 6. The car was travelling along the dotted line (in sketch) with the headlights dipped. The lights were dipped owing to the fact that they were normally out of focus. Owing to the road marked A.{Mr Adams} it appeared to the driver at first that the road went straight on, and it was not until he was quite close that he realised there was a bend. The brakes were then applied but failed to retard the car to any appreciable extent as both rear wheels locked and the brakes in front were not operating properly. The driver tried to take the corner but the front wheels of the car skidded on the soft grass shown in sketch, and the car therefore did not answer to the steering, but jumped the ditch and went through the hedge on the other side. The driver was just able to miss the tree and the car careered across the soft mud of the field, hit the bank shown in sketch and turned round, demolishing more of the hedge and coming to rest in the 6 ft. deep ditch at B. 7. Yes. 8. Approx. 2 ft. 9. 55-60 m.p.h. 10. Lucas Twin Alto - not sounded. 11. Both wing lights, rear light and head lights. 12. No other person than the driver involved. 13. No-one. 14. No-one. | ||
