To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst. C. to Ey. 142. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.10/MJ.8.11.35. FAILURES OF IGNITION COILS AND DYNANOS ON LARGE BORE BENTLEY ENGINE. During endurance tests now being carried out at high speeds on a large bore Bentley engine we have had two identical failures of ignition coils and a dynamo failure. The ignition coil failure was due to the wire connecting the primary winding to the top terminals breaking away where it is fastened by a 7BA screw to the terminal plate. Obviously the wire has been fatigued due to vibration of the coil and although this will not be so likely to happen when the coils are filled with Beekay wax we should safeguard ourselves by using a flexible connection at this point. The dynamo failure occurred due to vibration loosening the three 3BA screws holding the drive bearing retaining plate. Apparently some more positive form of locking the screws is indicated.
