X.294 - DYNAMOS FOR 40/50 AND GOSHAWK CHASSIS.

X.1402. During my visit to Mr. Royce the subject of dynamos was under considerable discussion. As you know, Mr. Royce recently stopped us working upon external vibrator regulator control of out-put and for the present no further work on these lines is to be carried out, with the one exception that Mr. Royce would like the shunt dynamo made from starter motor parts completing as already instructed to the Experimental Shop.

As regards the Goshawk dynamo, work on this for the present should be stopped pending modifications.

The modifications we require to make to both these dynamos consist in the fitting of an extra (third) brush to make these into single field winding third brush controlled machines. The matter of the angular position of the brush has already been discussed with Mr. Thacker and he is now able to proceed with this portion. There will be no alteration required to the armatures, but it will be necessary to alter the field windings to suit the lower available voltage arranged between the third brush and one main brush which will be approximately 3/4 of the full voltage of the machine. Thus it is a simple alteration to the field winding to make it suitable for this lower voltage.
