1064 6407. Policy To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. to E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.6/JH.19.1.37. SUGGESTION FOR REDUCING COST OF WRAITH RADIATOR. The suggested modifications which are tabulated herewith were discussed with E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} and are based on a redesign of the Wraith radiator for the purpose of reducing its cost. A rough sketch illustrating some of the points were handed to E/JBR. PROPOSED MODIFICATIONS. (1) Dispence with yoke as used at present, and use instead a stiff channel section corresponding to the base of the present yoke. (2) Mount the wing stays off this channel section, dispencing with the bar between the radiator proper and the wing stays. Lamps to be mounted off wingstays. (3) Use mild steel (tinned) sideplates of slightly thicker gauge than the present ones. (4) Mount the matrix unit off side plates by means of angles rivetted to same and supported off top of channel ends. (5) Shell to be stiffened, and supported at base of channel section and to be attached to matrix unit at top and sides so as to form a rigid braced unit. (6) Shutters to be mounted off shell and top bearing strip to be in brass with no bushes fitted, while bottom strip can be used to stiffen shell. (7) Matrix to be reduced in frontal area. (a) Raising bottom tank and leaving out starting handle - starting handle will now pass under the tank. (b) Increasing depth of top tank. Minimum matrix area to be 450 sq.in. (8) Bottom tank to be either a pressing out of thin gauge brass or a Dirtmpo pressing with the outlet pipe rivetted and sweated to it, no weight will be carried on this tank. (9) Top tank to be increased in depth and either. | ||
