Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Experimental Department, DERBY. Dear Sirs, Your Reference Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}10/R.{Sir Henry Royce} We refer to your letter of the 15th December, in which you enquire of us information concerning a certain bearing material which you believe is employed by Bugatti in France, and which is known as "AU.6". Well-knowing that we ourselves supply our NUMBER ELEVEN to this firm, we made enquiries through our French house, and we learn that our NUMBER ELEVEN is used for all the touring and sports cars, but for the racing cars they use roller bearings for the big-ends and our NUMBER ELEVEN for the main bearings. Then they use in certain engines for rail traction lead-bronze bearings of two different makes, one of which is made by one Chauviere. As our French people are well acquainted with all the materials they employ, we are forced to the conclusion that the AU.6 bearings must be these lead-bronze bearings. In any case, they are making further enquiries for us, and as soon as anything positive turns up they will let us know. Meanwhile, we are sorry that, in the absence of definite information, we are unable to draw comparisons between this material and our NUMBER ELEVEN "Z.3". In any case, we can assure you that there is no material being employed at the present time by Bugatti of the character of our NUMBER ELEVEN "Z.3." PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE. INTEREST WILL BE CHARGED ON OVERDUE ACCOUNTS. Time of delivery subject to strikes, lockouts, accidents, and other unforeseen contingencies. | ||
