To J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} from R.{Sir Henry Royce}

and as this particular top plate has very little to do, except to take this bending stress, I think the second plate might commence wherever convenient, somewhere between the theoretical position and the eye.

The point is that if we reinforce any part od the plate, we not only prevent that part taking any of the deflection, and the reinforcement piece also taking any deflection, but we throw the deflection on the rest of the spring, which is very uneconimical for weight.

With reference to the thicker plates on 2704 these seem to work quite satisfactorily and I understand are not unreasonably heavily stressed.

Perhaps if we made them a little thinner, and instead of the ends being sheared to a long and tapering point with the flat end, theynought to be brought with a quicker tapering to a closer point.
