To Mr. Bailey ... from G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Hancock.

Hydraulic Jacks.

My attention has been drawn to a growing complaint with the above.

The complaint is the slowness of returning after a while in service.

I tried several in the Depot at Cricklewood and the comparisons are marked. A new car jacked up when released, the jacks had returned fully in 1 min. 5 secs. Another car which the chauffeur regularly cleans the jacks took 3 mins. Four more cars were tried and they took from 15 mins. to 25 mins. one main ram refused to budge. From an outside view the rams are in a semi sticky condition as if the surface had been lightly covered with oil which had become varnish.

There is no sign of the plating rubbing of. Cliburn informs me that they have to thoroughly wash them with paraffin after which approximately 5 mins. is the time taken for fully returning (i.e. the two front). Do you think that the reservoir tank should be drained every six months in place of 12 months as stated, because I thought the oil I tried seemed to have thickened and inclined to be gummy.

G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Hancock.
