LUCAS DYNAMO.

Bench tests have now been completed on the dynamo submitted for test by the Lucas Coy.

This is a fan machine, which, generally, has been made to suit the 25/30 or Bentley car.

Particulars of this machine are as follows:-

| | Lucas. | R.R. |
|---|---|---|
| Type. | Shunt fitted with fan. | Shunt fitted with fan. |
| Yoke dia. | 5.0" | 5.0" |
| Weight. | 21lbs. 4ozs. | 23lbs. 7ozs. |
| Arm slots. | 23. | 24. |
| Brushes. | EG.3. | EG.0. |

The features of the odd number of slots, and the hard grade (EG.3) of brush, are in some respects, advantageous; but both tend to make the machine noisy. They have not, therefore, been adopted in the R.R. machine, where quietness has been considered an important point.

The tests carried out were in respect of:-

(1) Low-speed heating.
(2) Output performance.
(3) Commutation and noise.
(4) Endurance.

In each case the results obtained, are directly compared with the corresponding results for the small R.R. machine, on the same test.
