Contd. -4- Hsl/LG1.9.21. ------------ Tests we have taken, we consider, shew that the valve need never be open more than 60°. The percentage drop in HP. even at 2000 revs. from the combined loss of heating the charge, and the exhaust baffling is very small. We would recommend a very easy form of adjustment for this valve so that it is adjusted for Summer and Winter conditions. As we have pointed out previously, cars are not used for high- speed full power work in the Wintertime so that the butter- fly valve could be closed even more than 60°. We have made enquiries to see whether it was possible to obtain a thermostat valve to operate the butterfly valve so that the throttle would be kept at a constant temperature and 130° and 140°C. The Steam Fitting Co. at West Drayton could supply a valve for the above job. We have found that under normal running conditions, the butterfly valve operated in conjunction with the accelerator works very well because it is only rarely that full throttle is used.
