Re: 20 HP. Chassis Steering Columns.

On the 8th July, LHS.{Lord Herbert Scott} had a memo from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} saying that R.{Sir Henry Royce} had designed a stay for the existing 20 HP. column to give it lateral and vertical stiffness without depending on the instrument board, so that the scuttle can be totally isolated from the dashboard and thus enable us to get over some of our difficulties.

He said that a question arose as to whether this should be fitted on to the series of 20 HP. Chassis now being built but that there was a question of expense involved.

LHS.{Lord Herbert Scott} replied to the effect that the CSC. were very anxious to see a self supporting steering column on the 20 HP. as soon as possible, from a Coachbuilding point of view but that the question of method of doing it, was a matter for the Technical Department and the cost for the Administration.

We should like to know what the present position is.

We understand that Derby have been supplied with designs to enable the above to be carried out on Chassis with long raked columns as well as for the stiffened and revised rake columns but that you do not propose to introduce this feature until the revised column is produced, which means waiting until K.{Mr Kilner} series, whereas apparently, we might have it on J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} series as well.

In order that we may put any question of expense before B.J. we should be glad if you would let us know what the position is both from the technical point of view as regards it having been tested and thoroughly passed - and from the expense point of view if any additional expense per Chassis would be involved. In other words, if any parts hitherto used would be rendered useless, it becomes a question of how much extra the replacement parts would be per Chassis.
